Research is fundamentally about finding useful and consistent patterns in the real world. It performs experiments to test the accuracy of new and existing theories. It explores general laws (ex. gravity, electromagnetic induction, special relativity), uncovers desirable properties (ex. stainless steel, penicillin, silicon doping), and solves specific problems (ex. iron supplements, tetanus vaccine, refractive eye surgery).
