Web Browsing and Communications

DuckDuckGo - Secure search engine that doesn't track you or save/sell your personalized search history.

Protonmail - Secure email provider based in Switzerland. Simple and robust.

Guerilla Mail - Disposable email provider. Use to avoid spam for anonymous but insecure registrations.

Office Work

Libreoffice - Office suite program. Create documents, spreadsheets, slideshows, and basic drawings. Cross-platform with import and export compatibility for other office suite program formats such as Microsoft Word & Powerpoint.

Atom - Text editor and integrated development environment. Simple to use yet highly customizable. Get this if you ever plan to write or read code.

Graphics & Animation

Inkscape is a vector graphics editor. Create or edit logos, line art, infographics, and more. is an in-browser application for making diagrams with emphasis on alignment and node-to-node connections.

GIMP is a raster graphics editor. Produce, resize, crop, rotate, and retouch your photos and other dot-style image files.

Clip Studio Paint - Digital drawing program. Popular and effective. Get this if you want to draw illustrations or manga. Previously named Manga Studio. Use with a drawing tablet. See review by Brian Allen.

Blender is a free and open source 3D animation program with integrated video editor. Supported by the Blender Foundation.

Video & Audio

VLC Media Player is a video and audio player. Watch movies, listen to recordings and soundtracks hassle-free. It has cross-platform compatibility plus wide support for media filetypes and codecs.

Audacity is an audio editor and recording tool. Record your voice or music, manipulate audio clips for your media library, and import-export different filetypes. Great for handling standard audio tasks as an entry point below digital audio workstations (DAWs).

Kdenlive is a simple, robust video editor with primary support for Linux. Free and open source. Renders to numerous formats, including WebM, MP4 (AAC/HEVC), and more. Highly recommended.

Open Broadcaster Software is a free and open source program for video recording and live streaming.

KiCAD is a free electronic design automation (EDA) program. Open source and sponsored by CERN. Excellent entry point for designing circuit boards toward prototyping and production.

Autodesk - Mechanical design programs including product development, civil engineering, architecture and construction.


Internet Archive is a non-profit library of free images, documents, videos, and other multimedia. Here you can upload your files that are intended for public viewing.

Webpage Archive is a webpage snapshot archiving tool. Use its bookmarking feature for fast and convenient use.

Pastebin is a simple, fast repository for text snippets.



7-zip is a file compression and archival tool.

Ubuntu - Popular Linux operating system with massive community, frequent updates, and versions with long-term support. Excellent for new Linux users.

Nginx - Fast web server software. Deploy new web applications quickly.

MX Toolbox - Assorted online sysadmin tools

MySQL - Scalable in-drive database.

Redis - In-memory datastore. Excellent for scaling cache-appropriate data away from the database such as with auth tokens. Use as a stateless alternative to session variables.
